2023-08-28
The Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism gained immediate popularity upon its initial release in 2018, with over ten thousand copies circulated. Now, the eagerly anticipated third print is released, aiming to encourage use of this toolbook for learning terminology of Humanistic Buddhism in both Chinese and English, further promoting global Dharma propagation.
Since its release, The Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism has been widely regarded as a valuable tool for Humanistic Buddhist expressions in English. Growing demand over the years has urged Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism Center of International Affairs to release the third print in August, 2023. In this Glossary, vocabulary is carefully reviewed and aligned with the English terms used in Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s recent translated publications, enhancing its comprehensiveness while offering user-friendly search functions to translators and readers.
With its four distinctive features, the Glossary makes an essential companion for Dharma propagators and translators of contemporary Humanistic Buddhism, as well as individuals interested in learning English Buddhist terminology to gain deeper insights into Humanistic Buddhist thoughts. The four features include:
Rich Content: Contains over 5,000 commonly used terminologies of Humanistic Buddhism in Chinese and English, a handy tool book for English Dharma propagators and translators.
Diverse Vocabulary: Divides vocabulary of Humanistic Buddhism into 20 categories from Buddhist terminologies, temple buildings, exclusive terms from Fo Guang Shan, to Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s One-Stroke Calligraphy. It is useful for Buddhist translations, English Buddhist courses, lectures, and promotional materials.
Easy Term Lookup: Utilizes the Chinese phonetic notation Hanyu Pinyin and index by strokes, enabling Chinese users of all proficiency levels to quickly search for terms, enhancing translation efficiency. This feature also aids prospective English Dharma propagators and Chinese learners in finding English equivalents for Chinese articles and Buddhist terms, facilitating language learning and Buddhist studies simultaneously.
Online Search: Includes a digital vocabulary database, accessible anytime and anywhere on computers, cellphones, and other electronic devices. The compilation of The Glossary of Humanistic Buddhism originated from the need to standardize the vast array of Chinese and English terminology in Humanistic Buddhism, with the aim of sharing resources effectively to disseminate Humanistic Buddhist ideas and practices. Since 1990, Venerable Jue Men and the late Venerable Man Ho, former Executive Directors of the International Buddhist Progress Society, have been actively compiling frequently used vocabulary from Fo Guang Shan’s international Dharma propagation efforts spanning several decades. In recent years, the endeavor is continued by Venerable Miao Guang, Personal English Interpreter to Venerable Master Hsing Yun and Deputy Chancellor of Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism. She led an international translation team consisting of youths from global Fo Guang Shan temples, and students from the English Buddhist College of Fo Guang Shan Tsung Lin University in the compilation of this Glossary.
The release of the third print of the Glossary marks a significant step in making these teachings accessible across cultures. Gratitude extends to all contributors for their roles and collaborative efforts in this project. The Glossary aims to continue expanding its collection of terminologies, disseminating the wisdom of Humanistic Buddhism, and fostering its practical application in daily life.
