Hsi Lai Temple hosted the 2017 “Winter Love Joy Scholarships” on Saturday, October 28. The Temple and the Los Angeles Chapter of Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) awarded scholarships to 160 students from 32 schools in the Hacienda La Puenta Unified School District (HLPUSD) based on their academic records.

“I’m very proud, I’m emotional; so happy my son has been chosen. Strong character is important to our family and to be recognized for it is something special to us.” said the father of 1st grader Ryan Lynch, who added that his son achieved the award for his ability to follow the Three Acts of Goodness (do good deeds, say good words, and think good thoughts).

An estimated 850 guests of honor, sponsors, parents, principals, and volunteers attended the distribution of the scholarships to the students. Those in attendance watched performances by a Chinese Mask Show, Hsi Lai Temple Drum Team, Buddha’s Light Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the singing of the national anthem by the Los Altos High School Choir.

“I want to congratulate each and every one of my peers. Most importantly, I want to thank the Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple and Buddha’s Light International Association. I am honored to be a recipient of this scholarship.” said scholarship recipient Isabella Gonzalez, an 8th grader at Cedarlane Academy.

Venerable Hui Dong, Abbot of Hsi Lai Temple, offered words of encouragement for the youth in his opening speech.

“We all know youth is the future of our world. Therefore, education, not just teaching them the knowledge and training them, but teaching them how to be a good person. A person with a kind heart, caring, compassionate, responsible, humble, willing to sacrifice one’s self, ourselves for others, for the community, and for the world.”

The ceremony included the awarding of the “Winter Relief Fund” by Venerable Hui Dong to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Industry Station, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Station 91.

Ed Royce, U.S. Representative for the 39th District of California, congratulated students, thanked the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department, and presented a Certificate of Congressional Recognition to Hsi Lai Temple for outstanding dedication to serving the community.

"Your support for the next generation is truly commendable. Thank you Abbot.” said Rep. Ed Royce.

Also in attendance were HLPUSD board members, the superintendent, and the board members of the Hacienda Heights Improvement Association (HHIA), as well as Director-General Steve Hsia of Tapiei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles. These guests of honor help distribute the scholarship awards to the students during the ceremony.

Hsi Lai Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in North America and has organized the Winter Love Joy event for over 20 years.
