Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum held its Thousand People Sutra Copying event on November 5th. The goal was for people to familiarize themselves with the wisdom of the Sutra. Among the many participants, Buddha’s Light Centre first Subchapter brought fifteen members down to Fo Guang Shan at Southern Taiwan from Taipei to join the event. Members from the Henan Art Center also participated in the event to experience Sutra calligraphy.

The Director of the FGS Buddha Museum, Venerable Ru Chang, explained that the Sutra is composed of words and wisdom that have been verified through time. By copying the Sutra, people can understand its profound meanings and purify their minds. Venerable Ru Chang instructed the three steps to copying the Sutra: ‘qian xíng’ as prior to copying, ’zhengxíng’ as the actual sutra copying and ‘huí xiang’ as merit dedication. At ‘qian xing’, people should wear simple clothing, preferably Haiqing, the black robe with a Five Precepts robe. Before copying the Sutra, hands should be washed and the body and mind should be relaxed. The Sutra Calligraphy Hall has Sutras and writing utensils prepared. Anybody is welcome to join the Sutra Calligraphy event as long as they have a pure mind and good intentions. If someone is copying the longer version sutra, they may bring their own copy to the Sutra Calligraphy Hall and complete it over the course of one year, during which the hall can hold on to their work.

Venerable Ru Chang explained that the concept of merit dedication is based on the practice of sharing. People can dedicate or transfer the merit to specific people, such as family members or friends, or they can choose to transfer the merit to all of the living beings in the world. Venerable Ru Chang encourages worshippers to make time for Sutra copying, as it is a good way for people to restore their souls to life, clear their minds of hinderance, and achieve a carefree mindset.

Under the guidance of Venerable Ru Chang, the event was carried out solemnly. Zhi-Xiang Wang from Taipei moved her brush smoothly like passing clouds and flowing water. For her, Sutra-copying allows her mind to be relaxed and it acts as a reminder of her own inadequacies so that she can improve to become a better person day by day.

Yun-Feng Ni from Henan Art Center thought that the environment of the event was very tranquil. While he was copying the Sutra, there were many words that he did not recognize, as the Sutra was written in traditional Chinese. He often practices writing with fountain pens and copybooks. He expressed that although the writing utensils are different, the feeling is similar. It was his first time at FGS Buddha Museum and it was astonishing for him to see a thousand people gathering to do Sutra Calligraphy. He was also amazed by the fact that contrary to the amount of participants at the event, there were not many staff members. Even as such, chairs and tables were lined up neatly and the tasks were carried out carefully and smoothly. The volunteers’ selflessness also made a strong impression on him.
