Fo Guang University has always stressed the importance of promoting local culture. On November 16, President of Fo Guang University, Kirby Yang and Wu-Sa Culture Foundation Board Chairman, Wu Ding-Guo, signed a strategic alliance agreement for founding of Wu-Sa Culture Research Center at Fo Guang University.

President Kirby Yang expressed that Ilan has preserved many traditional Minnan culture. Among those, Wu-Sa’s developing Lanyang history and precious cultural resources have been recognized by Ilan people as a unique cultural property. Fo Guang University have focused significant effort on promoting local culture also further its vision towards globalization. Under the support of Foundation Board Chairman Wu Ding-Guo, Wu-Sa Culture Research Center was established. This is with the aspiration that the center will preserve Wu-Sa culture and contribute its efforts locally.

Foundation Board Chairman Wu Dingguo said, “Dean of College of Humanities, Hsiao Li-Hua and many teachers have helped and organised the Wu-Sa Culture Research Camp and Wu-Sa Culture Festival. In the future Wu-Sa Foundation will invest more activities related to its information/data collecting and research.”

Dean of College of Humanities Hsiao Li-Hua said she had been developing the Ilan study ever since three years ago she arrived at this department. With the help and resources from Wu-Sa Culture Foundation, she hopes more teachers and students will collaborate for research and publications.

Assistant Professor of Department of Chinese studies, Jian Wen-Zhi, who is also the chair of Wu-Sa Culture Research Center said, “I will unite teachers from three departments: Humanities Chinese, History, and Foreign Language, to design related activities to Wu-Sa Culture. Besides annual Wu-Sa Culture Summer Research Camp, I will invite more famous writers to Ilan for Wu-Sa culture light travel. Through their professionalism, more writings about Wu-Sa will be posted on major media.”

In 1976, during Ching Dynasty, Wu-Sa led thousands of young men from Fujian and Canton into Lanyang to explore this area and created a new Ilan history. Two hundred years later, though many Ilan people knew about Wu-Sa’s story, his significant impact on locals still need to be discovered.

Wu-Sa’s descendants dwelled at Jiaoxi where Wu-Sa Culture Foundation is located. Mr. Wu Dingguo, the 8th generation of Wu-Sa, is the Board Chairman, is significantly invested in philanthropy.He is very actively involved with Fo Guang University to promote any activities related to Wu-Sa’s spirit.
