During the North America Dharma Teacher Workshop, the monasteries in the US took turn to lead the morning meditation and evening chanting every day. The Venerables attuned the chanting based on the diverse geography of audiences. This was one of the keys of a smooth localization.
Chanting and meditation are indispensable in localization. Meditation helps people to pause their hasty pace, inspect themselves from within, and start afresh. Chanting is the voice to praise Buddha in Buddhism. Chanting with clear and purified voice can quiet people’s mind. Because of the busy lives nowadays, meditation has become popular in western countries. People rely on it to relax their body and mind.

On 8/13, Venerable Chieh Fan from Guang Ming Temple of Orlando led the evening practice. The Chinese “Praise of Incense” was replaced with “Homage to the Triple Gem” in English. The “Heart Sutra” was chanted in English. The Three Refuges were read in English first and then chanted in Chinese. The Transfer of Merits and Fo Guang Prayers were read in English. The participants were amazed by the combination of practice. Many said the most remarkable portion was the Three Refuges started in English and ended in Chinese. It was fusion in its finest form, reflected the spirit of “We are One”, and the best portrait of localization.

The participants appreciated the experiences of different styles of meditation every morning. They said it’s another great reward of this workshop.
