California State Senator Tony Mendoza hosted the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration at Steinmatz Senior Center in Hacienda Heights on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.

“We recall we possess strong knowledge of our origin and culture, which is why these events are vital.” said Senator Mendoza about the festival and its importance. He continued, “They also serve as an opportunity to bridge individuals from different backgrounds to better understand the history and culture of the Asian community.”

Over 150 people from the local community who came out to the festival were greeted by the senator. Among them is Venerable Youheng, who led Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Los Angeles Chapter Director Gena Ooi, and Hsi Lai Temple Outreach Department staff members Raymond Kong and Lorena Aguilar.

Participants learned about Chinese culture by enjoying a traditional Chinese instrument performance, listening to a traditional Chinese opera duet, and learning how to write Chinese calligraphy.

Joining Senator Mendoza at the festival were Ali Sajjad Taj, Mayor of Artesia, Chin Ho Liao, Council Member of San Gabriel, Laura Lee, Mayor Pro Tem of Cerritos, Carol Chen, former Mayor and current Council Member of Cerritos, Nick Holden, representing 4th District Supervisor Janice Hahn, and CHP officers Jeremy Tolen and Al Perez.

The festival ended with participants receiving mooncakes, a traditional Chinese sweet pastry which is an important part of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in the Chinese lunar calendar. Presenting mooncakes symbolically serves to create strong bonds among family and friends. “This is what brings us closer together and reflect.” said Senator Mendoza.
