Los Angeles—27 people from Southern California experienced a day of silence at Hsi Lai Temple’s One-Day Meditation Retreat on Sunday December 3, 2017.

Two Buddhist monastics, Venerable Youheng and Venerable Zhixing, led the retreat from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Students learned skills, rules, and regulations required for meditation.

“The main point of meditation is to learn to regulate the mind,” said Venerable Youheng to the participants at the start of the retreat.

To practice awareness of everyday activities, participants were asked to keep quiet at all times, including during meals.

“The purpose of staying silent is to understand and listen to the mind and choose how thoughts impact us,” said Venerable Zhixing.

Hsi Lai Temple regularly holds retreats and other activities for the English-speaking community which can be found on their website at: http://www.hsilai.org.
